in fairness, he is a professor at Emory and "Associate Chief of the Neurosurgery Service at Grady Memorial Hospital." but yea, 'wow' is really the only appropriate response. is obama just considering people who are simply names that will generate press or something? there have to be better choices than one of the guys from 'planet in peril.'

It appears that the argument out on the liberal blogosphere is that he's a great pick because the Surgeon General is our leading medical educator, and Americans know Sanjay. Plus, he can lend his Sanjaycred to universal-ish healthcare. Fair enough, but it's one thing to be famous and another to be liked; doesn't everyone generally agree that Sanjay's a smarmy prick? I mean, he made Michael Moore likable.* That's not easy.

as a liberal, i do agree about the smarmy prick thing. what did the SGs under Bush do? Carmona complained of interference after his term ended, but the other guys were silent.

i think it's a shame that fame= people will actually listen to him. just look at James Watson on race or E.O. Wilson (and RIchard Dawkins) on sociobiology (ugh. go Gould).

I don't recall the Bush Surgeon Generals doing anything, but nothing would probably be better than Sanjay doing fireside chats about the makings of a healthy diet. Oh, and for future reference when you're blog-commenting about Surgeon Generals, in lawland, people will think you're talking about the Solicitor General if you say SG.

Re: [even more wow.]

so basically, this guy's a dumb dumb? this isn't too surprising since he affiliates with Anderson Cooper. they're a couple of punks who ask "tough questions," then, with simple solutions to big problems? as a scientist, i am a bit embarrassed.

this is why you hire someone with some goddamned sense

A dumb dumb who teaches medicine at Emory? I kinda figure someone wrote this book for him, don't you? And maybe you could explain to me the widespread hate for Anderson, to me he seems like an affable guy who runs a reasonably intelligent show, compared to the competition anyway.

even if someone wrote it for him, which is probably the case, shouldn't there be quality control/facts to back him up? or say he contributed some major ideas, because you never want to be affiliated with bad science.

i didn't know there was widespread anderson cooper hate, it's just a personal thing with me. he comes off a bit holier-than-thou. but i rarely watch tv, so my opinion means close to nothing.
